MARIETTA, Ga. (June 20, 2019) – The Caltech men's tennis team's recruiting Class of 2023 has checked in at No. 23 in this year's Division III recruiting class rankings, compiled by TennisRecruiting.net.
The incoming class of Beavers includes John Kim from Cupertino, Calif., Rishi Gundakaram from Wyoming, Del., Nathan Zou from Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Ammaar Saeed from Naperville, Ill. Kim is the highest ranked of those players, a three-star recruit billed among the website's top-200 players. He is also the only incoming player with a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) over 10, a rating which is calculated using a player's last 30 eligible match scores over the previous 12 months. For each eligible match, the algorithm calculates a match rating and a match weight; a player's UTR is the weighted average of all the match ratings regardless of age, gender or geography.
Gundakaram should also factor into the the team's future plans as the site's 208th-ranked player who also received interest from Carnegie Mellon University, the school with this year's top-ranked class. Zou compares well to Gundakaram as another three-star player with a slightly higher UTR despite not being ranked as high on the site, as does Saeed who is ranked 311th. Collectively, this year's men's tennis class ranks third among SCIAC teams only behind national stalwarts Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
All four players are expected to file in around the Beavers' top duo, Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley), who are days removed from being named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III Second Team.
