PASADENA (June 5, 2019) – The Caltech men's tennis team has finished the season with its highest year-end ranking of all time, coming in at 24th in the nation in the final set of spring ITA rankings. Caltech is one of five SCIAC schools to appear in this year's end-of-year rankings, and are ranked fourth among programs in the conference.
From an individual standpoint, sophomore Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) made his debut in the national singles rankings, rounding at the top-10 players in Division III with the highest singles ranking in program history. Shanker, along with two of his teammates also received recognition in the regional singles rankings. Shanker finished the season as the third-ranked player in the west region, while classmate James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) finished 13th and junior Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) made his debut in the regional rankings coming in at 23rd. Collectively, Caltech ended the 2019 season as the West region's fifth-highest ranked team.
Shanker and Wei, the Beavers' top doubles team and this year's ITA Regional champions, finished the year ranked fourth in the region.
