Shanker, Wei Named Academic All-District

PASADENA (May 16, 2019) – Caltech No. 22 men's tennis sophomore Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) have been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large Team.

The Google Cloud Academic All-America program is selected by members of CoSIDA to recognize the nation's top scholar-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom.

Shanker and Wei have both recorded cumulative grade-point averages in excess of 4.0 while starring on the court for the Beavers. Already two-time All-America selections following last year's first-round victory at the NCAA National Championships doubles draw and this Fall's ITA West Regional doubles title and fourth-place finish at the Oracle Cup, the duo have led this year's team to a program-best high ranking of 21st in the nation while defeating No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for the first time in history.

Shanker has also qualified for this year's NCAA National Championships as a singles competitor after closing the regular season ranked second in the West region. He will begin competition next Thursday, May 23 in his home state at Kalamazoo, Mich.

As First Team All-District selections, both Beavers will advance to the national All-America ballot, which will be released on Wednesday, June 19.
