PASADENA (Apr. 20, 2019) – The 25th-ranked Caltech men's tennis team did its upperclassmen proud on Senior Day with an 8-1 victory over visiting Whittier College this past weekend.
Seniors Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) and Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) starred for the Beavers with Nguyen picking up wins in both singles and doubles action while Li put the exclamation point on the day with a 6-3, 6-2, win at sixth singles. Nguyen won at second doubles with freshman Patryk Kozlowski (Irvine, Calif. / University High) in a come-from-behind 8-7 (7-5) victory, then proceeded to win 6-3, 6-0, at fifth singles.
Sophomores Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) rebounded with a convincing 8-3 victory at first doubles before they went on to win at first and second singles respectively. Shanker's 17 singles wins are a new program record, beating out Wei's 15 from the season prior. All of Shanker's victories came at first singles, and the second-ranked singles player in the region is currently in the midst of perhaps the most prolific individual season in the history of the men's tennis program. The duo have also matched last season's program-record 12 dual match doubles wins. Sophomore Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) and junior Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) also earned singles victories to cap the regular season, a two-win improvement overall on the season prior.
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers will travel to the 119th Ojai Valley Tournament later this week but have also drawn the fourth seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The Beavers will travel to Claremont for a rematch with the top-ranked Stags in the conference semifinals on Friday, May 3.
