Shanker Moves to 2nd in West Region

PASADENA (Apr. 11, 2019) – Sophomore Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) of the 25th-ranked Caltech men's tennis team furthered his distinction as the program's highest regionally ranked player of all time, moving to second in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional rankings.

Shanker, who appeared third in the latest edition of the rankings, gained one spot thanks to an unbeaten stretch of singles wins that saw him take out players from the 20th-ranked University of Redlands, California Lutheran University and Occidental College, with the latter win avenging a key loss from his rookie year. Classmate James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) also appeared in the regional singles rankings this time placing 16th out of 25 players.

Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers will host arguably their most important match of the season on Friday, Apr. 12 when they take on No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 3 p.m.
