TEMPE, Ariz. (July 24, 2018) – The Caltech men's tennis team has qualified six scholar-athletes for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic team, announced on Tuesday.
The men's team featured all three freshmen players on the all-academic list, Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow), James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day). Caltech also featured junior Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) and sophomore Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs), repeating from 2017 in addition to Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell), who returns to all-academic prominance after qualifying as a freshman in 2016.
The men's team also received the ITA All-Academic Team award, awarded to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year, including fall 2017 and spring 2018. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
