PASADENA (Mar. 28, 2018) – Freshman first doubles team James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) continued their perfect month of March with an imposing victory to help the No. 35 Caltech men's tennis team to a 9-0 win over Pacific Lutheran University. The win is the Beavers' fifth in the last six contests.
Shanker and Wei picked up an 8-3 at first doubles, to help their team to a fast start against the visiting Lutes. The two went on to win both of their singles matches, albeit in different fashion. Shanker contended with a stiff challenge from the Lutes' first singles player but went on to win his match, 6-4, 6-3 while Wei handled his opponent at second singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Beavers' early momentum allowed the team to mix its players at the bottom of the lineup and still pick up convincing victories. Junior Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) won at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-1 and fellow junior Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) returned to the Caltech singles lineup and responded with a 6-0, 6-0, win in the fifth slot.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will finish up the month of March at home against Chapman University on Saturday, Mar. 31.
