TYLER, Texas (Mar. 26, 2016) – Caltech men's tennis took an impressive three singles matches at No. 27 UT-Tyler on Saturday morning to conclude a three-match Texas trip.
Despite facing the highest-ranked opponent on their non-conference schedule and with freshman Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) still limited to just doubles play, the Beavers fought furiously from the outset. UT-Tyler matched its top doubles team, which includes a pair of top-50 singles players in the nation, against freshmen sensations Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) and Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) at #3 and cruised to an 8-2 victory. The Patriots took the top court 8-4 not long after, but Nguyen and junior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) barely gave an inch before finally succumbing at #2, 8-6.
UT-Tyler quickly clinched with straight-set victories at #1 and #4, then claimed #2 looking well on the way to a sweep. The remaining three Beavers refused to give in, however, and went on to take the final three matches. Junior Ramsathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) claimed #6 (6-4, 6-2), followed by twin brother Ruthwick at #3 (6-4, 7-5) and Liu in a superbreaker at #5 (6-4, 3-6, 10-8).
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers return to Pasadena to host Pacific Lutheran University (1-6) on Thursday, Mar. 31 at 4:00 p.m.
