LA MIRADA, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2016) – Freshman Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) maintained his perfect start to his collegiate career, improving to 3-0 in both singles and doubles, as Caltech men's tennis was unable to hold a doubles lead in a 5-4 defeat at Biola University on Saturday.
Biola took a brief 1-0 lead with an 8-5 win at #1 doubles just moments before Li and freshman Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) closed out #3 doubles, 8-4. Ramsathwick and twin Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) battled through a back-and-forth match at #2 doubles, finally prevailing in an extended tiebreak, 9-8 (6), for the crucial second doubles point and the 2-1 match lead heading into singles.
Li wrapped up #5 singles with ease, 6-0, 6-2, and junior Ramsathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) brought Caltech within one point of clinching the match with a 4-3 lead, with the junior winning 6-2, 6-4 at #3. Biola had already won at #2 and taken the first set at each of the remaining three courts, however. The Eagles went on to close out each of the last three matches, including a narrow 6-4, 6-4 win at #3, while Liu put up the longest fight before succumbing at #6.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers (2-1 overall, 1-0 SCIAC) head to defending national champion No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (5-0) on Sunday, Mar. 6.
