OJAI, Calif. (Apr. 22, 2015) – A combined six players from the Caltech men's and women's tennis teams will participate in this weekend's 115th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament. The women's draws begin Thursday, Apr. 23 and the men's commence on Friday, Apr. 24.
Sophomore Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and freshman Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) will represent the women's team in singles. Sophia Chen's first-round match will be against NAIA Westmont College's Alyson Meyer, who has compiled an 8-7 record between courts #3 and #4 and a 2-1 mark at #2 this season. First serve is set for 9:30 a.m., with the winner facing whoever advances between Pomona-Pitzer Colleges' #5 Emily Kuo and Chapman University's Rachel Fox, the No. 14 seed and West region No. 15-ranked singles player. The rookie Chen will challenge Chapman's unranked #1 Sophia Duong first thing in the morning at 8:00 a.m. in a rematch from March 27, when Duong came away with a 6-4, 6-1 victory that was played far tighter than the score indicates. The winner will play either No. 16 seed and West region No. 18 Mary Zhao from Pomona-Pitzer or Biola University's #6 Lauren Vogel at 11:00 a.m.
The Beavers will pair up in doubles for the first time since the fall ITA West Regional tournament, with the duo set to face a familiar foe in Meyer along with Fernanda Rivera of Westmont, who have tallied just a 2-1 mark at #3 doubles this spring.
Four men are set to represent the Beavers in the Division III tournament in both singles and doubles. Sophomore Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) will face last year's tournament darling in CMS's #6 singles player Max Macey, who made a run to the semifinals in 2014, bright and early at 8:00 a.m. Friday. Junior Rushikesh Joshi (Sunnyvale, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty) took seven games against Macey (6-4, 6-3) at #2 just two weeks back. The winner will immediately face University of Redlands #2 Nick Cummins, the West region No. 17-ranked singles player, who was awarded a bye by virtue of his No. 8 seed.
Twin Ruthwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) was handed a golden opportunity in the draw as he will square off against Chapman's #4 singles player in Charlie Werman, whom sophomore Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) faced earlier this season as well, dropping a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 decision. First serve is set for 9:30 a.m., with the winner turning right around to face West region No. 20 Joe Dorn of CMS , the No. 10 seed, at 12:30 p.m.
Lebby will take on Cal Lutheran's #2 Fergus Scott, whom Joshi played to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat just last week, at 9:00 a.m. The winner will face the No. 13 seed, UC Santa Cruz's #3 Kyle Richter. Joshi pulled arguably the toughest draw in the first round, where he will face Pomona-Pitzer's #3/4 Graham Maassen at 8:00 a.m., with the winner set to play the No. 16 seed, Chapman's #2 Justin Thompson at 11:00 a.m.
In the doubles draw, the Pathireddy twins were fortunate to be slotted into the lowest-seeded (8) pod, but will have to get past UC Santa Cruz's #3 doubles team of Derek Levchenko and Chad Stone at 3:00 p.m. in the first round if they want to face Redlands' West region No. 15 pairing of Ted Burchett and Gram Leahy. Joshi and Lebby will take on CMS' Bryan Mehall and Lester Yeh at the same time, with the winners set to face the No. 2 seed, West region No. 3 Redlands' Cummins and Patrick Lipscomb.
