ANAHEIM, Calif. (Mar. 27, 2015) – Sophomore Ruthwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) and Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) matched last year's entire win total with their eighth victory at #1 doubles as the Caltech men's tennis team took on No. 40 Chapman University on Friday afternoon.
The Panthers took the other two doubles courts and swept singles in an 8-1 victory that was much closer than the final indicated. Chapman, also ranked No. 9 in the West region, improves to 8-6 overall while Caltech is now 5-6 (0-4).
The Pathireddy twins stayed on serve through the first 12 games before getting a chance at break point, but failed to convert it. They closed the deal in the next opportunity, however, to post the 9-7 win at the top slot. The Beavers competed well at #2 (8-5) and #3 (8-3) but fell at each to trail 2-1 heading into singles play.
Chapman quickly clinched the match with decisive victories at #2, #3 and #6 singles, but the Beavers made the hosts earn every inch at the other three courts. Sophomore Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) barely dropped his first set at #4, 7-5, and fought hard before going down, 6-3, in the second. Junior Alexander Henny (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough) rallied after a heartbreak 7-6 first-set loss to take the second, 7-5, and traded points well into the superbreaker before finally bowing out, 10-7. The day ended with Ruthwick Pathireddy taking the region's No. 14-ranked player in Justin Thompson down to the wire, going down in three sets – 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will host West region No. 13 Occidental College (5-9, 1-4) on Saturday, Apr. 4 at 2:00 p.m.
