PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 25, 2015) – Sophomore Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) emerged victorious from an epic 32-point superbreaker at #3 singles to cap the men's tennis team's 6-3 win over Willamette University on Wednesday morning.
The Beavers get back to .500 on the season at 5-5 with their fifth win in seven matches while the Bearcats are now 2-9.
Caltech swept doubles for the third time this season, with Sathwick Pathireddy and twin Ruthwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) taking #1, 8-2, and both other Beavers pairings winning 8-5.
Lebby made short work of his opponent at #4 singles, bringing Caltech within one point of clinching the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The Bearcats made things interesting with victories at the bottom two spots and first-set leads at #2 and #3, but Ruthwick Pathireddy ended their hopes of a rally with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the top slot for the Beavers' fifth point.
Willamette stole a hard-fought battle at #2, 6-4, 7-6 (3), leaving just Sathwick Pathireddy at #3, where the sophomore had rallied from an exhausting 6-7 (4) first-set defeat to force a superbreaker with a 6-4 win in the second set. The opponents traded blows well beyond the minimum 10-point threshold, with Pathireddy finally coming out on top, 17-15, for the well-earned victory.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to SCIAC play as they head to the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club to face Chapman University (7-6, 1-2) on Friday, Mar. 27.
