PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 22, 2015) – Four Beavers combined to sweep the top two doubles and four singles spots in a 6-3 victory for Caltech men's tennis over Pacific Lutheran University on Sunday morning.
The Beavers moved to .500 for the first time this season at 4-4, while Pac Lutheran dipped to 2-8.
All three doubles matches were finished in well under an hour as none went beyond 10 games. Sophomores Ruthwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) and Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) finished first with an 8-2 victory at #1, followed shortly by sophomore Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) and junior Rushikesh Joshi (Sunnyvale, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty), who won 8-1 at #2. PLU took the third match seconds later at 8-1, leaving Caltech with a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Joshi and Lebby tallied the first two singles points at #2 (6-2, 6-3) and #4 (6-3, 6-2) to bring the Beavers within one of clinching the match. With just four courts available as the women's teams matched up simultaneously, it was a race between the Pathireddy twins and Ruthwick sprinted to the finish, taking #1 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Sathwick was not far behind, finishing off his opponent 7-6 (2), 6-4, for the Beavers' final point of the day, as PLU claimed quick victories at #5 and #6.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will host Pacific (Ore.) University (8-2), which is ranked No. 10 in the West Region, on Monday, Mar. 23 at 9:30 a.m.
