PASADENA (Nov. 9, 2019) – Freshman Shoonhsin Li (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) of the Caltech men's swimming & diving team made an impression on Saturday, debuting with a 200 Fly program record when the Baevers hosted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Li took first in the event, holding off four Stags en route to a 1:53.20, breaking Henry Steiner '19's school record by exactly six-tenths of a second. The only event winner on the day for the men, Li also made some noise in the 100 Fly, where his 52:02 slots him in at third on the all-time list and brought him within two-tenths of a second from beating out CMS' top competitor in the event. Classmate Daniel Nee (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) swam the same event as Li, earning his way to fifth on the all-time list in another successful debut. Earlier in the day, Li teamed with junior Andy Rothstein (Potomac, Md. / Winston Churchill), freshman Joshua Lee (Santa Clarita, Calif. / Valencia) and junior Adam Kogan (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa East) to combine on the sixth-fastest 200 Medley Relay swim in school history.
Lee also made an impact individually with top-10 marks in the 100 Breast, 200 IM and 200 Breast, where his 2:08.52 ranks him third all-time. Freshman George Wythes (Solana Beach, Calif. / Torrey Pines) debuted on the top-10 lists in the 100 and 200 Back, and the 1000 Free saw three Beavers post top-time marks, including freshman Nathan McAlister (Reno, Nev. / Davidson Academy), sophomore Thomas Barrett (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) and freshman Isaac Smith (Tuscaloosa, Ala. / Northridge).
Head Coach Andy Brabson and the Beavers will have a chance to build on their day in two weeks when they host Occidental College, California Lutheran University and the University of Redlands beginning at 9 a.m.
