CLAREMONT, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2019) – The Caltech men's soccer team concluded the 2019 regular season at SCIAC regular-season champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday evening.
The Stags got a pair of early goals thanks to two accurate crosses that gave the Caltech defense little chance to contest. The Beavers went on to tighten up defensively, however, holding the home team off the scoreboard for the ensuing 48 minutes. Sophomore midfielder Samir Johnson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) gave the Beavers a pair of key chances in each half, though the visitors were unable to capitalize. Sophomore goalkeeper Max Popken (Westport, Conn. / Staples) made four saves in the season finale, bringing his team-leading total to 42 despite only having joined the team in October.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers finish the injury-riddled 2019 season having taken a step forward from the season previous. The Beavers' five conference points are the program's most since 1987, and this season marks the first time the Beavers have accrued multiple ties in a season since 1995. Freshman midfielder Sam Klauer (Knoxville, Tenn. / Christian Academy) closes his rookie season as the team's leading goal-scorer and point-getter with four tallies in 15 games.
