PASADENA (Oct. 2, 2019) – The Caltech men's soccer team had its most effective offensive day of the 2019 SCIAC season Wednesday afternoon when it took on the University of La Verne in the annual Orange Out game.
Led by forwards Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) and Rohan Mirchandani (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill), the Beavers nearly outshot the Leopards and threatened the visiting team on several occasions in the attacking end; particularly in the early going. All three of Mirchandani's chances came within two minutes of each other. The junior generated a run down the left side of the field eight minutes into the game and fired the ball straight into the charging goalkeeper before getting the ball back on a rebound, only for the keeper to get a hand on the second-chance shot. Additional chances were created by sophomore midfielder Samir Johnson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) and freshman defender Josh Finnerty (Walled Lake, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central).
The shorthanded Beavers defended well for the majority of the game, with the Leopards' opening goal coming on an unlucky rebound. After La Verne struck again in the 65th minute, Caltech held the visitors off the scoreboard for the final 25 minutes of play. Junior Chad Thut (Dover, N.H. / Berwick Acad.) made his debut in net and played well, stopping nine shots from the visiting team.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will try again to bag their first SCIAC win of the season this Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Chapman University.
