THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Sept. 8, 2018) – Freshman Samir Johnson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) gave Caltech men's soccer a chance to rally in the second half but the Beavers could not come up with the equalizer in a 3-1 defeat at California Lutheran University on Saturday evening.

Caltech began the game with a couple shots to put some pressure on the Kingsmen defense, but the hosts settled in and took the lead with two quick goals in the 17th and 20th minutes. With time waning late in the half, senior Nikhil Gupta (Herndon, Va. / Thomas Jefferson Science & Tech.) touched a pass up to Johnson, who lashed it into the upper left corner of the net from long range to halve the deficit.

Sophomore Chad Thut (Dover, N.H. / Berwick Acad.) began the second half with an effort on frame in an attempt to tie the game quickly, but it was saved and another by junior Theo Yang (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) also was saved, while CLU came up with a late insurance goal to seal the win.  Sophomore Joe Como (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) made another eight saves in the defeat.

Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will continue the search for their first SCIAC win at Whittier College (0-2 SCIAC) on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
