POMONA, Calif. (October 3, 2015) – Senior Theodore Wilkening (Bowie, Md. / Elen) scored his team-leading third goal of the season but the Caltech men's soccer team lost , 8-1, at SCIAC rival Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers fall to 0-8 overall while the Sagehens improve to 4-5-2 (4-3-1).
Pomona-Pitzer created two shots and earned a pair of corner kicks within the first 10 minutes, but could not capitalize on the opportunities thanks to the Beavers' organized defense. Unfortunately for Caltech, the defense was unable to hold off the Sagehens any longer as the hosts scored two goals in the 11th and 12th minutes. After another scoreless 12 minutes, including two defender blocks, the Sagehens scored again on a header to make the score 3-0 at the 25-minute mark. In the 29th minute, Wilkening converted a penalty kick to cut the deficit to two and give the Beavers momentum. The Saghens would regain the three-goal margin before halftime, however.
The Beavers defense came out strong again in the second half, keeping the Sagehens off the board for the first 22 minutes, but ran out of gas down the stretch and allowed four more Sagehens goals to end the game 8-1.
Junior J.D. Feist (Richardson,Texas / Jesuit College Prep) recorded three of his four saves in the first half before giving way to freshman Nikhil Gupta (Herndon, Va. / Thomas Jefferson Science and Technology), who made three saves in his collegiate debut, midway through the second.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will travel to the University of Redlands (7-2-2, 5-2-1) on Monday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
