PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 10, 2018) – The Caltech men's and women's fencing teams each had representative fencers compete at the 2018 NCAA West Regional Championships held at Braun Athletic Center over the weekend.
On the women's side, freshman Laura Hu (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport) made her debut at the regional championships when she participated in women's epee. As a freshman fencer, Hu managed to finish ahead of a fencer from the University of the Incarnate Word. Meanwhile, men's epee saw senior Ethan Lo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto), senior Spencer Strumwasser (Carlsbad, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy), junior Qifan Wang (Surrey, Canada / Semiahmoo Secondary) and freshman Zimo Zhu (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) compete. Of the quartet, Zhu finished with the highest national qualifier rating, which bodes well for the Beavers' future at the weapon. The men also had representation at foil and saber, as freshman Andrew Chan (Denver, Col. / Littleton) represented the Beavers in men's foil and junior Aaron Shih (Santa Monica, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) did his part in saber.
The men's and women's fencing teams capped off a successful season in which the men won the IFCSC Epee Championship following an undefeated 14-0 season under Head Coach Carla Corbit.
