PASADENA (July 25, 2017) – Caltech men's basketball has announced its schedule for the 2017-18 academic year following its most successful consecutive seasons in program history.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers will open the year with a pair of exhibition games against local NAIA foes. The first matchup will take place at The Master's University on Nov. 4 and the second in Pasadena on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. versus Vanguard University.
The regular season begins at Occidental College (13-11 overall, 6-10 SCIAC) in the third annual 110 Rivalry game on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. The rivals' record in the game is split at 1-1, while the Beavers have won four of the past six meetings against the Tigers, whom they will face twice more on Jan. 10 in Eagle Rock and Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7:00 p.m. in Braun Gymnasium.
The Beavers have paired with the University of La Verne to welcome Linfield College and Pacific (Ore.) University, which placed third and sixth, respectively, in the Northwest Conference last season. Caltech will host Pacific on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. following the La Verne-Linfield matchup at 4 p.m., with the Leopards hosting games the next day.
Caltech will participate in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Classic at the University of Redlands on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1 and 2. Eslinger's squad will face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday and the University of California, Santa Cruz on Saturday. The Beavers have faced UW-Whitewater just once in program history, suffering defeat in 2003-04.
Eslinger will look to capitalize on another matchup against Colorado College after an 80-71 victory gave Caltech its first win of the season last year as he takes the squad to Colorado Springs on Dec. 13. The Beavers also host Knox College on Saturday, Dec. 16 at and Buena Vista University on Friday, Dec. 29, both at 5 p.m., to complete the non-conference schedule.
Before the calendar year turns to 2018, however, Caltech will begin SCIAC play at Whittier College on Dec. 21. The Poets were the only SCIAC team Caltech swept last year, 95-83 in Pasadena and 85-62 on the road.
In the first game of the New Year, the Beavers welcome the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (14-12, 10-6) to Braun Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7:00 p.m. The Beavers pulled the upset in their home finale last year, 61 -59, in the home finale last season. A road game at Redlands on Jan. 6 precedes the second meeting with Oxy, after which the Beavers hit the heart of their schedule with four home games in their next five.
The home stand begins with SCIAC Tournament participants La Verne (16-10, 10-6) and California Lutheran University (20-7, 12-4), both teams which lost significant production to graduation this year, on Saturday, Jan. 13 (5 p.m.) and Wednesday, Jan. 17 (7 p.m.), respectively. The reigning SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (23-5, 13-5) will host Caltech on Jan. 20, with the Beavers getting an early second shot at Whittier on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. and completing the first round of SCIAC play as hosts to Chapman University (10-15, 5-11) on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. The Beavers split with the Panthers last winter, claiming a 64-52 win in the first matchup in Pasadena.
The stretch run begins at Pomona-Pitzer on Jan. 31, with home dates against Oxy (Feb. 7) and Redlands (Feb. 10) opening the season's final month. The Beavers' last road games will take place on Feb. 14 and 17 at CLU and ULV, respectively. The regular season concludes at home against CMS on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
The SCIAC Tournament is set for Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24.
