PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2015) - Caltech men's basketball junior Kc Emezie (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge) has been named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for Feb. 10.
Emezie led the Beavers to a 2-0 week and their first back-to-back SCIAC wins since the 1953-54 SCIAC Championship season. The junior wing hit the game-winning layup just before the buzzer to beat Redlands, 49-47, to snap a 55-game conference losing streak on Tuesday and played a crucial part in the Saturday 92-77 victory over Whittier College. He went 8-of-13 from the field, including a perfect 2-of-2 from long range, against the Bulldogs while marshaling a defense that allowed a season low in points. Between the two games, he averaged 18.0 points on 56 percent shooting, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists while committing just one turnover in each.
Emezie is the second men's basketball player to be recognized this season, as senior Andrew Hogue (Arroyo Grande, Calif. / Arroyo Grande) was honored for the week of Dec. 23. This is the Beavers' fourth award overall this academic year, with men's soccer sophomore John David Feist (Dallas, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) and women's basketball sophomore Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) also winning the award.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger will lead Emezie and the rest of the Beavers will look to make it three in a row on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (14-5, 7-3).
