PASADENA, Calif. – In a game which neither team held a lead larger than seven points, Pomona-Pitzer posted a 47-41 win over Caltech Saturday evening in a men's basketball SCIAC match-up.
Pomona-Pitzer (5-7, 1-0) jumped out quickly and when Donald Okpalugo layed-in a bucket off a Stephen Shawn assist they held a 13-7 lead. That advantage with 12:32 remaining in the opening period was the largest lead the visitors had on the evening.
Caltech (4-8, 0-1) battled back and on the strength of an 18-5 scoring spurt and held a 25-18 lead with 4:49 left until halftime. That seven-point edge proved to be the largest lead for the Beavers. Caltech eventually went into halftime with a 29-24 cushion.
During the final period each squad had a rough time finding the bottom of the net as both team's shot below 30 percent from the field. Mike Edwards pushed the Caltech lead back to seven points (32-25) on a three-pointer with 16:51 left in the game.
The Sagehens fought back and got their deficit down to 32-31 with 10:45 left on a James Moss put back. A carefree Beavers squad quickly pushed their lead by scoring six of the game's next seven points. However, Pomona-Pitzer put together a 13-2 scoring run as they took a 45-40 lead with 1:34 left in the game. Will Dooris hit one of the two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to bring Caltech within 45-41 but the Sagehens did just enough at the foul line to put the game away down the stretch.
Pomona-Pitzer sealed the game by holding the Beavers to one made field goal during the game's final nine minutes.
Mike Edwards posted a game high 15 points in 35 minutes to pace the Beavers scoring attack. Ryan Elmquist scored 12 points while grabbing a team high eight rebounds.
