PASADENA (Mar. 28, 2018) – Senior shortstop Chris McCarren (Kenilworth, Ill. / North Shore Country Day) got the Caltech offense going with four hits against visiting Middlebury College in Tuesday's one-off non-conference baseball game.
McCarren reached base on all five at-bats, and made his presence felt early scoring on a Connor Moffatt (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) single into center field. The senior captain went on to double twice while knocking in three runs, two of which came in the second inning when he sent junior catcher Mark Burleson (Ladera Ranch, Calif. / Tesoro) and senior first baseman David Watson (Windsor, Colo. / Windsor) home on a hooking line drive down the right field line. McCarren later scored Watson again in an identical situation with runners on second and third. Watson, to his credit had a three-for-four day himself with all three of his hits going for singles.
Sophomore Cortland Perry started at second base but eventually came in and delivered two and one-third innings of clean pitching relief where he struck out three batters. He also knocked in the Beavers' fifth run a sacrifice fly to score McCarren. The Beavers hung with the Panthers for more than half the game and thanks to the likes of McCarren and Watson matched the visitors with nine team hits.
Head Coach Matthew Mark and the Beavers will play SCIAC teams in the next four series', starting with Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on the road, this Friday Mar. 30.
