PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 19, 2018) – Fueled by a home run from junior infielder Connor Moffatt (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington), the Caltech baseball team had its most productive outing of the season against Williams College on Monday afternoon.
Moffatt's blast came in the bottom first in the form of a three-run shot well over the left field wall to put Caltech up 3-1 over the visiting Ephs. The round tripper was Moffatt's first since last season and the Beavers' first this season to score more than just one run. The top of the order, middle infield duo of Chris McCarren (Kenilworth, Ill. / North Shore Country Day) and Cortland Perry (New York, N.Y. / The Dalton School) benefitted as the scoring runners on Moffatt's homer.
The Beavers' primary power source this season, freshman Mitchell Watson (Windsor, Colo. / Windsor), like Moffatt came up with two hits of his own and added his 10th run of the season, tied for the team lead. Following the home run, Caltech's next bit of offense came from senior pitcher Garrett Levine (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) who connected on at least one hit for the fourth consecutive game, this time a double to bring home Perry for a second time in the bottom fifth. Perry eventually got in on the run production himself with a single into right field the following inning to score McCarren and sophomore outfielder David Adams (Atlanta, Ga. / Holy Innocents' Episcopal School). The strong tailwind ultimately got both teams involved in the shoot out of a game, but the extra production should boost the Beavers' confidence as they look to get something going when the SCIAC schedule kicks back in.
Head Coach Matthew Mark and the Beavers will return to SCIAC play on Friday, Mar. 23 when they host the University of Redlands before heading out to Redlands to meet the Bulldogs for a doubleheader the following day.
