The Caltech baseball team neared the end of the season as they hosted Occcidental on Friday afternoon before traveling to Pomona-Pitzer for a Saturday contest.
Friday, April 20 – Occidental 14, Caltech 1 (Box Score)
Occidental jumped out early with a six-run first inning and never looked back in posting the seven-inning victory. During the opening frame, the Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate.
The visitors plated two more in the third inning then a solo run in the fourth before the Beavers scored the first run in the bottom half of the fourth. Jerome Skelly singled home Brian Penserini for the home teams run.
Occidental put the game out of reach with two runs in the fifth and then three more in the seventh.
Chris Caldwell drove in five runs, including a grand slam in the opening innning, while scoring two more runs to aid in the Tigers cause.
Saturday, April 21 – P-P 16, Caltech 1 (Box Score)
Three big middle innings busted open a tight contest as Pomona-Pitzer took advantage of four Caltech errors in the win.
With the Sagehens leading 3-0 after three innings, the Beavers plated a run when Eric Schropp scored on a throwing error by the catcher. However, the home team responded with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to increase their lead.
Pomona-Pitzer all but put the game away with a six-run fifth inning. Unfortunately for the Beavers all six run were unearned.
Erik Munzer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI from the leadoff spot for the home squad while James Campbell was 2-for-2 with three RBI's and three runs scored.
The Beavers offense got a pair of hits each from Brian Penserini and Albie Lavin.
Stuart Gano started the game and went five innings for the Sagehens, allowing six hits while striking out four.
