Caltech Posts SCIAC Road Win at CLU

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Caltech withstood a strong offensive Cal Lutheran effort with back-to-back quick striking goals in recording a 2-1 win on Wednesday afternoon.

"The team really came together today. We were struggling in the attacking third in first half but found our form in the second half," captain Brice Nzeukou said. "Our defense really stepped up as we held on to our lead. This is a great start to the season. We expect to be as competitive with many more teams this year."

The home team opened the scoring in the 14th minute Lucas Kurzon headed home a David Lee corner kick. In the opening 45 minutes the Kingsmen held a 11-3 edge in overall shots while posting a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Caltech scored the game tying and eventual game winner less than one minute apart. Theodore Wilkening tied the score with an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute from five yards out. Mitchel Arene scored the game winner when he took feed from Rongxiao Zhang before beating the Kingsmen goalie 33 seconds later.

It is the first SCIAC road win for Caltech since they beat Whittier in overtime on Oct. 20, 2007. The Beavers last beat Cal Lutheran in 2008.

The Beavers overcame a Cal Lutheran 29-7 edge in total shots.

Wesley Swank made six saves in goal to post his first collegiate victory.
