LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2017) – Caltech freshman Claire Hu (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M. Gunn) has been named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year for women's cross country, as voted on by the conference's coaches.
Hu finished 13th overall and second among freshmen in her first conference championship race this past weekend and earned Second Team All-SCIAC Honors. She was Caltech's top finisher and really began to turn a corner at SCIAC Multi-Duals where she posted the Beavers' top time of 23:03.35 and finished 18th among all runners.
"This is nice recognition for Claire and all of her hard work, but we really see it as a team award," Head Coach Ben Raphelson said. "For a freshman to come in and thrive right away, it reflects really well on the environment and the mentorship provided by our returning runners. Claire is one of a handful of freshmen who have come in and made a big impact. Our whole team had a hand in that and should be proud."
Raphelson, Hu and the Beavers are currently in preparation for the NCAA West Regionals set for Nov. 11 at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. The first race is set to begin at 9 a.m.
