RIVERSIDE, CA – The Caltech cross country team's competed in their second race of the season at the 33rd annual UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday morning.
The event featured over 20 teams from all NCAA division as well as schools from the NAIA. A handful of elite and sponsored runners competed in the competition that had over 500 runners competing in four races.
During the women's race Stephanie Reynolds took top honors among Beaver harriers by running the course in personal best time of 19:52. Marlyn Moore's time of 20:41 over the 5K course was also a personal time at that UCR course as she finished second among her Caltech teammates.
Finishing less than 30 seconds behind Moore was Juliette Becker. The senior completed the event in 21:09. Rachel Thorp clocked a time of 21:29 while first-year Emily Mazo rounded out the Caltech top five with a time of 22:40.
As a team the ladies finished 16th out of 20 schools. In addition they topped fellow SCIAC member and finished within striking distance of league foes La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer.
Adithya Bhagavathi ran a strong race for the Beavers during the men's competition. The sophomore completed the 8K loop in 27:07 to finish seventh among SCIAC runners. His time was also nearly 30 seconds better than last year's on the same course. Ian Koss was Caltech's second finisher. The junior crossed the finish line in 27:53 which was nearly a 90 second improvement from his previous best time at the event.
Alexander Anemogiannis was the third finisher for Caltech with a time of 28:10 – also an improved mark for him on the course. In their first event of the young season, Eric Martin (28:39) and Juan Adame (28:52) rounded out the scoring runners for the Beavers.
As a team the Beavers placed 13th in the 17-team field. They topped La Verne and were close proximity of Redlands, Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer.
