PASADENA, Calif. – The second ranked University of Redlands women's water polo team posted a 15-4 over Caltech on Saturday afternoon.
The game marked the eighth straight contest against a ranked team for Caltech.
Redlands opened up a big early advantage by scoring the only five goals in the game's opening period. The visitors added to their lead with the first goal of the second frame with 6:35 left until intermission. The Beavers put their first goal on the board when Caitlin Regan found the back of the net. After a Redlands made the score 7-1, Caltech's Erin Hoops tallied a goal while on the extra-person attack. Unfortunately for Caltech the visitors scored the final two goals of the period to halt the Beavers momentum.
The third period was played close throughout but the Bulldogs won the frame 3-2. The Bulldogs opened the scoring before Hanna Dodd fired a shot from seven yards (Video) out for the first Caltech goal of the frame. After a Redlands goal made it 11-3, Hoops scored her second goal of the game (Video) on the extra-person attack. Redlands responded with their final goal of the period in taking a 12-4 lead into the final stanza.
The nationally ranked Bulldogs finished the game by scoring the final three goals of the game in taking the victory while staying in the top half of the SCIAC standings.
Hannah Ongman took top scoring honors on the afternoon with a five-goal outburst. Deandra Van Houten chipped in a hat trick to aid in the Bulldogs efforts.
Caltech Connie Hsueh recorded an 11 save effort for the Beavers. It marked the 10th time this season the first-year blocked at least 10 shots in a game.
