WOMEN'S WATER POLO
April 20, 2009
Women's Water Polo Plays Tough at Home FinaleSaturday, April 18th had the Caltech women's water polo team hosting their home season finale against the visiting Whittier College Poets and put on their most spectacular performance of the season, they did. Forced to play without team scoring-leader and captain Mary Dorman, the defense was out in force holding an strong Poet team (ranked #8 in the nation) to only 5 goals with only one of those coming after the first quarter. Senior co-captain, Lori Spalsbury anchored the back line working to slow the Poets attack alongside freshman Janis Intoy, who led the host Beavers with 6 steals. On the offense, freshman Caitlin Regan notched the first goal of her young career in the fourth quarter and Spalsbury created a number of opportunities including a near miss in the closing minutes where she beat the defense and the Poet goal keeper only to hit goal post. "This marks the third consecutive strong outing for us" commented Coach Josh Moser, "we have continued to improve all season and that is very rewarding". The team now look forward to a rematch with number-one ranked and top-seeded California Lutheran to open up the SCIAC tournament at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, April 24th. GO TECH!!!
