Maureen Burl enters her sixth season coaching the Women's Volleyball team.  She began coaching at Caltech in 1995, after leaving a career at JPL as an electrical engineer.  In the four years she coached (through 1999), the program grew in popularity among the female athletes at Caltech.  So much so, that a "JV" squad was created with their own coaches and gym time.  Coach Burl took a break from coaching to start a family after the 1999 season.  She returned to head the program in 2006.  During her second stint as head coach, she was thrilled to find the same type of unique and amazingly dedicated female athletes, along with the new experience of competing in SCIAC.

Burl received her Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Boston University in 1986, where she played volleyball and softball.  She followed her husband out to California for him to return to his alma mater, Caltech, for graduate school.  While working at JPL, she widened her horizons by becoming a personal trainer and teaching weight training classes at Caltech.  She also played on the Caltech Women's Volleyball Team before it became an intercollegiate program.  Her involvement with Caltech grew as she and her husband became Resident Associates in one of the student houses.   Making the transition from JPL Electrical Engineer to Caltech Head Women's Volleyball Coach was a big move.  Coach Burl's love of the sport and desire to see other science and engineering female students have the chance to compete on an intercollegiate volleyball team were the motivating factors behind the switch in careers.

Coach Burl and her husband, Mike, reside in La Canada with their four children, Orion, Titan, Chiron and Elara.
