PASADENA (June 14, 2018) – The Caltech volleyball team has unveiled its schedule for the 2018 season, which will consist of 10 home contests and four tri-matches, half of which will occur in another state.
The Beavers open the regular season with the first of the four tri-matches at Life Pacific College on the first of September where they will take on the Warriors and Providence Christian College. The Beavers will then head to West Coast Baptist College in Lancaster. Caltech handled Baptist in two meetings last season, dropping nary a set but will need to avenge defeats to Life Pacific and Providence Christian in order to get the 2018 season off on the right foot.
The Beavers will then head to Wisconsin where they will play four matches in two days, the first of which will come against Alverno College and round-robin host Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday, Sept. 7. Caltech will end the road trip the very next day against Benedictine University (Ill.) and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The four-game weekend should give the new-look Beavers a chance to see how they stack up against unfamiliar competition from up north before beginning SCIAC play late the following week.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers open up their SCIAC schedule against Whittier College on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., but will not open at home until the following afternoon when they host Chapman University at 2 p.m. Caltech will alternate SCIAC home and away matches for the rest of the month, starting at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Tuesday, Sept. 18, followed by co-conference regular season champion California Lutheran University the ensuing Friday at 7 p.m.
The Beavers will then travel to the University of La Verne the very next day for a 7 p.m. clash, followed by a home tilt with defending SCIAC tournament champions Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Tuesday, Sept. 25 before traveling to the University of Redlands on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. The Beavers had their most competitive conference matches with the Bulldogs last year, scoring their first SCIAC victory in the two teams' final meeting in Pasadena and previously took a set from Redlands on the road in the prior meeting. With a new crop of recruits offering a blend of skill and depth, Caltech could contend for Redlands' spot and more in the SCIAC pecking order.
Caltech will begin the month of October against visiting Occidental College on the second of the month at 7 p.m., the first of a four-match homestand. The Beavers return to Braun Gymnasium on Oct. 6 for their final tri-match of the season against Mills College and the University of St. Katherine. Caltech took on both schools in a home tri-match the same week of October last year, blanking Mills before coming up short against the Firebirds. The Beavers finish up the homestand by opening up the second half of SCIAC games against visiting Whittier on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
The volleyball team will then alternate between away and home matches the rest of the year, beginning on Friday, Oct. 12 at Chapman before returning home the following afternoon with Pomona-Pitzer at 2 p.m. for the annual Orange Out clash. Caltech returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Cal Lutheran before opening up the weekend with visiting La Verne at 7 p.m and concluding it at CMS the following day. The Beavers will then take on Redlands at home on Senior Night in the second of two pivotal SCIAC matches on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
Caltech closes out the regular season with its SCIAC finale against Occidental on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. The SCIAC Postseason Tournament is set for Thursday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 3.
