LA VERNE, Calif. (Sept. 23, 2017) – Following a SCIAC volleyball match at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday afternoon, Caltech jetted over to the University of La Verne for the second of two matches on the day.
Freshman Krystyna Maruszko (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Marymount) once again led the Beavers with eight kills to go along with a team-high nine digs and five assists. She also contributed two assisted blocks, as did fellow freshman Christine Yu (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose). Sophomore Sakthi Vetrivel (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) added on assisted block while fellow sophomore Helena Shield (Mercer Island, Wash. / Mercer Island) had an assisted block of her own in addition to the Beavers' only solo block of the match. Sophomore Mei-Ling Laures (Chicago, Ill. / British International School of Chicago) played all three sets and led the Beavers with nine assists.
The Leopards proved to be an overall tougher test for the Beavers in the team's second match of the day. Caltech never quite did find its footing though a Maruszko kill did break up a 5-0 run for the Leopards to open the second set.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 26 to host Occidental College for a 7 p.m. game.
