Mondello, Lauinger Pace Caltech Defense Against Chapman

PASADENA (Sept. 22, 2017) – Freshman Allessandra Mondello (Kinnelon, N.J. / Villa Walsh Acad.) and sophomore Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) led the Caltech Volleyball defense effort with 10 digs each as the Beavers fell to visiting Chapman University (9-3, 4-0 SCIAC) on Friday evening.

Mondello, the team's top option at libero, also assisted on three kills while Lauinger, a fixture on the outside also led the Beavers with seven kills. Fellow sophomore Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire) returned to the lineup and managed five kills of her own.

The Beavers held their own in the first set, their best set, at one point trailing the veteran Panthers 16-14, spurred by a 7-3 run in the middle of the action. Freshman setter Kystyna Maruszko (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Marymount) led the Beavers with nine assists while sophomore Ellie Walker (Minneapolis, Minn. / Blake School) returned to the lineup to contribute six assists of her own.

Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 26 to greet SCIAC rival Occidental College for a 7 p.m. match.
