PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2015) – The Caltech volleyball team came within one point of its first SCIAC set victory in a decade but fell, 3-0, to Whittier College on Saturday night.
The Poets end conference play at 18-9 overall and 10-6 in the SCIAC while the Beavers end their slate 2-22 (0-16).
With fans dressed in costume for Halloween, it took some time for Caltech to get going but everything clicked late in the second set. After a 25-6 first set defeat, the Beavers found themselves trailing 16-7 in the second when they ran off three straight points and matched the Poets point-for-point down the stretch. Whittier held the margin to a 25-14 win, but the tone had been set and Caltech hung close early in the third set. The Poets threatened to put the match away with five unanswered points to break a 7-7 tie, but the Beavers turned the tables with a six-point run of their own as senior Cat Jamshidi (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary School) smacked three consecutive kills to level the score at 16-16.
Whittier steadily regained the upper hand at 23-21 but a Poets attacking error, ace by freshman Subhadra Vetrivel (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) and kill from junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) gave the Beavers a chance at set point, 24-23. Whittier came up in the clutch, however, to escape with the victory at 26-24.
Jamshidi totaled 13 kills on a .257 hitting percentage while senior Harinee Maiyuran (Irvine, Calif. / Arnold O. Beckman) made 13 assists and senior Amy Hu (Rockville, Md. / Montgomery Blair) recorded nine digs.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will close the curtain on the 2015 season this Tuesday, Nov. 3, when the host West Coast Baptist College.
