PASADENA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2015) – The Caltech volleyball team scored its most points in a set against the University of La Verne since 2007 before falling, 3-0, on Thursday night.
The Leopards, who received votes in the latest national poll, improve to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC, while the Beavers slip to 0-6 (0-2).
La Verne came out firing with the first six points and 12 of the first 13 of the match to cruise to a 25-8 opening set victory. The Beavers kept the second set much tighter early on with a 3-1 lead, but with the Leopards up 9-7 the visitors rattled off 11 straight points en route to a 25-11 win.
The third set began to shape up like the first as La Verne went ahead, 5-0, but Caltech steadily climbed back into the mix at 6-5 and soon ran off five unanswered points to take the lead at 12-10. The Leopards regained the edge with five straight points of their own, but Caltech responded with another six-point run to make it a three-point set. La Verne dug deep, however, to score seven of the final eight points and seal the match with a 25-22 victory.
Senior Cat Jamshidi (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary School) led the Beavers with six kills while senior Harinee Maiyuran (Irvine, Calif. / Arnold O. Beckman) made nine assists and sophomore Mayra Melendez (Salinas, Calif. / York) recorded 10 digs.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will take a short break from competition before heading to Chapman University (3-3) on Friday, Sept. 25.
