La Verne Tops Caltech in SCIAC Road Contest
LA VERNE, CA – In their second road SCIAC match of the season, the Caltech volleyball squad dropped a 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-15) decision to La Verne on Friday evening.
During the first set the home squad never trailed. The Leopards jumped out to a quick 11-4 advantage and never looked back in taking the opening stanza.
It was a similar story in the second set as the Leopards used an early scoring spurt to control the frame. With the set tied at 5-5, La Verne went onto score 12 of the contest's next 16 points in grabbing the momentum and putting the set away. During the second frame the Leopards offense was clicking to the tune of a .522 hitting percentage.
A tough Beavers squad fought back by opening the third set with a scoring run of their own. Caltech held an early seven point advantage after a Paige Logan service ace gave the Beavers an 11-4 lead. However, a major scoring run turned the match towards the Leopards. The home squad scored 13 of the next 14 points to grab a 17-12 lead and control the match down the stretch to grab the win.
Caltech's Katie Ching had a team best six kills while Logan pitched in a four-kill effort.
The La Verne duo of Randi Taylor-Toomay and Brittany Yaxley combined to have 25 of the Leopards 48 kills to pace the home team.
