Whittier Holds Off Caltech
PASADENA, CA – Alyssa Sialaris had a match high 12 kills en route to helping Whittier to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-20) on Saturday evening in SCIAC women's volleyball match-up.
Sialaris, who came into the match as the conference leader in kills, also hit a match best .500 to aid in the victory.
Whittier came out of the gate strong along the service and front lines. They tallied 11 total kills and while accumulating six service aces in taking the first set.
In the second set the Beavers fought back from an early 6-1 deficit to make the stanza an eventful one. Caltech went on a 9-4 scoring spurt to tie the frame at 10-10. However, a mini scoring run by Whittier kept the visitors in front. Trailing 14-10, Caltech got their deficit back down a point at 16-15 but couldn't draw any closer down the stretch as Whittier took a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third frame proved to be close in the middle portions as well. With Whittier holding an 8-7 advantage, they slowly nudged that tight lead to 19-14. The Beavers made a final push and got within 19-17 after an attack error by Whittier's Megan Kirkpatrick. Whittier never let the home squad get closer than three points down the stretch in sweeping the contest.
The Beavers continue their home stand with a match on Tuesday evening against eighth ranked Cal Lutheran at 7:30 p.m.
