PASADENA, Calif. – Pomona-Pitzer jumped out early in each set as they knocked off Caltech 3-0 (25-4, 25-10, 25-9) on Saturday evening in SCIAC women's volleyball match-up at the Braun Athletic Center.
The first set saw the visitors jump out early to an 8-0 lead to force a Beaver timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Sagehens continued to apply pressure as they scored 10 of the next 12 points in forcing another Beaver timeout en route to taking the first frame.
The story was similar in the second set as Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to an 11-4 edge. The Beavers fought back and got their deficit down to 13-7 but couldn't draw any closer as the Sagehens pulled away and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Pomona-Pitzer continued their momentum into the third set. The visitors started the stanza on a 13-3 scoring spurt and never looked back in sweeping the match. During the set Pomona-Pitzer's libero Heidi Leonard became the school's all-time digs leader.
Sophie Tweed-Simmons led an effective Sagehens attack with seven kills. As a team the visitors tallied 31 kills and a .389 team hitting percentage to aid in their efforts.
The Beavers Katie Ching had a team best six kills during the match which was her second best total during her collegiate career.
Caltech's final home match of the season is next Friday, Oct. 28 when they face-off against CMS at 7:30 p.m.
