Whittier Overcomes Caltech’s Solid Defensive Effort

PASADENA, Calif. – Lauren Whiteman posted a match high 14 kills to aid Whittier in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-12) win over Caltech during a SCIAC women's volleyball match at Braun Athletic Center.

The Whittier (7-20, 2-11) offense spread the wealth around as five different players posted at least five kills in the match. Courtney Dickerson also had a strong front line effort for the Poets with an eight kill performance.

Although the Poets held control most of the opening game, the Beavers put a scoring spurt together midway through the game to cut Whittier's lead to 16-13 after a Teri Juarez kill. However, the visitors finished the opener on a 9-2 scoring run to take an early lead in the match.

Caltech (1-17, 0-11) came out quickly and grabbed a 5-3 lead in the second game. However, the Poets took control by scoring five consecutive points and never let the Beavers rally in taking a two game lead in the contest. Whittier won 10 of the final game's first 13 points and never let Caltech get closer than five points during that third game in sweeping the match.

Caltech's back line played one of its matches of the season as they tied a season high with 43 team digs. Ying Ying Tran and Juarez each tallied 15 digs to lead the Beavers back row defense.

Paige Logan played a strong offensive match for the Beavers as she had a team high seven kills while posting a .353 hitting percentage.
