PASADENA (Feb. 10, 2018) – The Caltech women's tennis team came extremely close to toppling No. 35 University of Redlands in is second SCIAC match of the season on Saturday afternoon.
Three of the Beavers' four wins came in singles action. Freshman Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) stepped in at fifth singles and in her first career match defeated her opponent in swift fashion, 6-3, 6-1. Caltech's other two singles wins came with more adversity. Junior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) lined up at third singles for the first time of the season and rallied from a 4-6 first set to ultimately earn the final two sets 6-2, 6-2 thanks to multiple service breaks. Senior Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) needed a tiebreaker to take the first set from her opponent at sixth singles, but once she arrived there completely took over the match. She won the tiebreaker 7-1 before going on to win a decisive 6-1 second set.
The Beavers began the day with a win at third doubles when Wang teamed up with junior Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) to take down the Bulldogs' third best team. Though the match came down to the wire, Caltech can still supercede Redlands with a strong run in SCIAC play going forward. The Beavers will end the year with five conference matches but won't see SCIAC play again until the last day of March.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 15 when they host Colorado College.
