WOMEN'S TENNISWomen's Tennis Earns First Victory of the SeasonFeb 29, 2008
![]() February 29 - The Caltech women's tennis team were able to build on their solid performance versus Cal Lutheran last week. Against the visiting Cyclones of Mills College, the trio of Leslie Tong, Ellen Hsu, and Lili Yang all won their singles contests. The Beavers jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles play. Caltech's #1 team of Wadsworth & Hsu won 8-2, and the #2 team of Yang and Tong followed with a win 8-4. The Cyclones would not go easy as they fought back during singles play to tie the overall match 4-4. With Caltech's Lili Yang still on the court, she won her first set easily 6-1, however Mills' Lisa Kelly began to play more aggressively by dominating the net to lead most of the second set. With Yang down 5-6, she battled back to bring the set to a tiebreak. The tiebreak was a seesaw battle with Yang ultimately winning it 9-7 when Kelly's forehand sailed long. "Yang sealed the deal for our first match win 5-4 by ousting her opponent 6-1 7-6 (9-7)" commented head coach, Mandy Gamble. Caltech will take a will take a brief hiatus for from match play for final exams and return to the courts on March 23 at 3:00pm when they host George Fox University (OR) in a non-conference match. |
