The "Dean" of SCIAC Aquatics Coaches, 2009-10 is Coach
Dodd's 31st season on the Caltech campus. Upon arriving
in Pasadena in December 1979, Dodd took over the helm of the men's
and women's swimming programs. The following fall, he assumed head
coaching duties for the men's water polo team and after 30 year of
coaching water polo, he is currently focusing on coaching the men's
and women's swimming and diving teams. Dodd attended Humboldt State
University, where he played water polo and learned springboard
diving under NCAA champion Frank Logan. After receiving his B.S. in
Biology and Physical Education in 1977, he was selected to play
water polo on a team touring Australia, New Zealand, Venezuela and
Hawaii. He returned to the U.S., teaching at Downey (Calif.) High
School and Cal State Los Angeles prior to graduate studies from Cal
State Los Angeles.
Dodd's one-year tenure at Downey High was a return to his alma
mater, where he led the water polo team to the 1972 CIF
Championship. Following graduation from CSULA, Dodd began to
co-coach at SCIAC-rival Whittier, prior to his appointment at
Caltech a few months later. In addition to his coaching duties,
Dodd teaches swimming and diving courses at Caltech. He also serves
as a consultant with a company in Palau, Micronesia, working on
specimen collection for the U.S. Department of Health in the effort
to help find a cure for cancer and AIDS. Dodd and his wife, Suzy,
have two children, Hanna and Emma. Hanna is a freshman at Caltech.
