Dominican Downs Caltech in Second Day of Fall Classic
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In their final game of the Caltech/Occidental Fall Classic, Dominican used a scoring run midway through the first half in knocking off Caltech 71-50 on Sunday afternoon. It was the second and final game for each school in the four-team Fall Classic hosted by Caltech and Occidental.
The Beavers raced out to a 7-2 lead less than four minutes into the contest but couldn't keep its early momentum. Dominican (4-2) scored 10 consecutive and 26 of the game's next 32 points in taking a commanding 28-13 advantage with 6:22 remaining until halftime. Undaunted, Caltech (0-5) chipped away and got their deficit down to 30-20 when Krissy Dahl nailed a jumper with 1:16 left in the frame. It proved to be the final points of the first half.
A Dahl jumper on the Beavers first possession of the final half brought Caltech within 30-22 but that would be as close as Caltech would get the rest of the game. The Stars grabbed all the momentum and slowly built their advantage up to 27 points when the held a 62-35 lead with 7:51 left in the contest.
The Dominican bench played well as the Stars role players accounted for 30 points in the victory. In Saturday's opening game of the Classic, Dominican posted a 73-68 double-OT win over defending regular season SCIAC co-champion Occidental.
Dahl had her best game on the young season as she scored a game high 14 points while grabbing a team high eight rebounds. The junior also blocked a game high four shots. Fellow post player Paige Logan had a solid game for the Beavers as the freshman grabbed eight rebounds to go along with her five points and two blocks.
Sarah Budz and Becky Christofferson tallied 13 and 12 points respectively to pace the Dominican offense.
