Women's Basketball Opens Season At La Sierra Today

The Caltech Women's Basketball team tips off the 2009-2010 season this evening against the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University.  The Beavers wrapped up the preseason on Sunday, getting time on the court against two scrimmage teams.  The Beavers tried their wares against both La Sierra and UC Merced last week, and return to LSU for the real thing.

I was pleasantly surprised both times we took the floor.  We had a total of six practice days to prepare with a whole team.  Plus, this is one of those out of the ordinary years where we only have 10 on the roster.  When you head into a season with those numbers, I think any coach would be silly to get too full of themselves.  Depth has always been a problem for us at Caltech, and it is an even great obstacles this year, said head coach, Sandra Marbut.  ??However, in both scrimmages, our numbers were not a big factor.  Our team was in great shape, and was able to do some things because fatigue wasn't as big of a factor as it has been in the past.  The two teams we saw on the scrimmage floor could not have been more different, giving us a great preparation for the year ahead.??

A key ingredient to Tech's preseason success was the maturity of the younger players on the roster.  "Our sophomore class got a lot of time on the floor last year, and it helped them grow into what we saw this past weekend.  There was obviously a list of things to work on, but we were happy about how many things went well" said Marbut.  "We are never going to get the luxury of an easy game, that isn't in the cards anywhere for us.  But we were able to see some thing that was new for us, and they are things that can absolutely mean being competitive every night.  That was a great feeling."

Caltech hopes to rattle La Sierra's cage with a 7:30pm tip off at LSU in Riverside, and a solid start on the `09-10 campaign.
