WOMEN'S BASKETBALLPrairie Fire Heats Up in 2nd Half to Defeat BeaversDec 19, 2009
![]() In game two of the Caltech CMS Holiday Classic, dubbed the West Coast versus Midwest, Knox College was able to march to a 29 point victory over Caltech. What started as a close game where many shots feel short but every shot had potential to spark a surge, the Prairie Fire and Beavers battled it out. Neither team had an easy time finding a shooting groove early on, but Caltech notched the better shooting percentage in the first period. Shooting almost half the number of shots, Tech shot 30% in the first twenty minutes, where Knox found the bucket only 19% of the time. With only a one basket edge, Knox won the first half, but the Beavers were in close pursuit. At the opening of the second half, it looked as if the teams would return to the same tit for tat play of the first period, but the nasty combo of fatigue and foul trouble had different plans for Caltech. For the first time this season, the depth issue dealt a tough blow to Caltech. A roster of only ten players, depth has had the potential to cripple Caltech all season. With Krissy Dahl and Sarah Wright fouling out with plenty of time left to play and the Lisa Yee leaving the floor for muscle cramping, Caltech exhausted its reserves and Knox was able to get the confidence building baskets it needed. Hitting shots that were elusive in the first half, Knox went inside and outside, and didn't miss when it counted. Shooting 43% in the second half, Knox who hit only 3 from behind the arc before half time, came back with 7 threes in the second half. As Caltech's composure faded away, the Knox full court press got better and better, forcing 30 turnovers and creating 21 steals for the Prairie Fire. Neither team was able to gain any ground at the charity stripe with Tech shooting 55% to offset Knox at 52%. Caltech's Teri Juarez came up with the game highs in both the
points and rebounding columns. Juarez scored 18 and pulled in 16
off the glass. Teammate Lisa Yee provided the other double double
of the evening, with her 11 points and 10 rebounds. Even in the
shadow of foul trouble, Krissy Dahl was able to swat four shots
before heading to the bench with five fouls. |
