WOMEN'S BASKETBALLBeavers Rebound to Dig Out Monday Matinee Victory, 68-52Jan 4, 2010
![]() They say that only when you have experienced the deep, dark valley can you really appreciate the view from the highest peak. In a span of less than a week, the Beavers have seen the valley and tonight saw the view from the peak. Only six days ago, the Beavers were finishing with only four players on the court and tonight they were able to take down the Eagles of Southwestern by 16 points. Although Tech certainly couldn't say everything went their way, enough things did to make win #4 possible. The groove Tech was looking for was a bit elusive for the opening minutes of the game. It took the Beavers more than 4 minutes to put their first point on the board, thanks to Frosh Sarah Wright's free throw. Then it was another three minutes before a basket by Teri Juarez started things going in the right direction. Finally 10 minutes into the game the Beavers found a rhythm and started competing. Southwestern would take a one point lead with 7:00 to go in the first half, but Tech came back to tie on the next possession and never lost the driver's seat again. Caltech went into halftime with an 8 point lead. Determined to open the game even farther, Tech came out ready to scale the peak and opened the lead to as much as 22 at one point. With everyone on the Tech roster seeing solid minutes, the Beavers worked their offense and looked at different sets, using the comfort of a lead to prepare for conference play later in the week. Tech definitely had its best shooting night of the season. The beavers were able to finish the night hitting their shot 46% of the time. The second half saw a blazing net, as 52% of Tech's shots fell through the bottom of the bucket. Southwestern's fouls were painful for the Eagles as Tech was hot at the line as well, shooting an amazing 83% from the stripe. The rebounding margin also fell on the Tech side of the box score, with the Beavers out rebounding Southwestern 45 to 27. A season high 15 offensive rebounds were pulled in by Tech. Two Beavers would finish with a double doubles. Sophomore Krissy Dahl posted one double dipper with 17 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Going 8 for 14 from the field, Dahl was simply too much for the Eagle defense. Despite constant double teams, Dahl made the adjustments and thanks to her teammates scoring, the paint opened up and Krissy was able to convert on high percentage shots. Dahl also swatted four shots. As of mid-December Dahl is ranked 9th in the country for blocked shots. Her teammate, senior Lisa Yee had the other double double, Yee finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Yee also finds herself in the national rankings as of mid-December. Ranked at #4 in the rebounding category, Yee has reached the highest national ranking at any point in the season for any Caltech player in the program's history. Teri Juarez continues her gritty play under the rim, scoring 16 points and missing her own double double by one rebound, finishing with 9. The final two starters were not left out of the action. Frosh Sarah Wright knocked down 13 points of her own and showed her range on the jumper, while teammate Erin Hoops had 11 and was a perfect 8 for 8 from the line. Every Beaver did the job from the line as the team went 19 for 23. Tech hopes to ride the wave of momentum into a much improved conference. SCIAC play begins on Thursday as Caltech takes on Whittier in Braun Athletic Center at 7:30pm. GO TECH!!! |
