WOMEN'S BASKETBALLCaltech Women Fall to Visiting FontbonneNov 29, 2009
![]() An early morning start proved to be a curse for the Beavers of Caltech as the women's basketball team took on Fontbonne in a 10:30am tip off this morning in Braun Athletic Center. Tip off came 30 minutes earlier than scheduled to assist Fontbonne in their journey to the airport and the crush of holiday weekend traffic. Tech took it in stride, but never really found their groove. Know for their late night study sessions, the Caltech campus rarely gets going before 10am on a school day and the early weekend start just wasn't optimal for the Beavers. Able to connect on only 16 points in the first half, the Beavers just sputtered through the period hoping something would catch. It never did. Tech shot 26% from the floor before halftime. The second half proved to be a better outing for Tech, as they were able to score 33% of the time. The Fontbonne press also stifled any Tech momentum, forcing 32 turnovers from the young Beavers. The second period was much improved, and they were able to find some sort of rhythm. Only scoring four points less than the Griffins in the second half, Tech pulled out at least twenty minutes of solid play by the final buzzer. But it wasn't enough to ease the sting the 36 point scoring deficit. Bright moments were turned in by a pair of youngsters wearing Caltech orange. Sophomores Teri Juarez and Erin Hoops both put up 12 points for the Beavers. That wasn't the duos only contribution to the box score. Juarez had her first double double of the season, adding 10 boards and a perfect night from the charity stripe. Hoops shot 50% from the floor and was 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Senior Lisa Yee struggled to put the ball in the basket, but made a big impact on the glass grabbing 14 rebounds, while Krissy Dahl swatted five Fontbonne shots. Caltech is back in action on Wednesday night in a doubleheader with the men, both teams taking on the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University. The women tip off at 5:30 with the men following at 7:30pm. GO TECH!!! |
