WOMEN'S BASKETBALLPioneers Upset 2-0 Beavers in Tech's Home OpenerNov 23, 2009
![]() Coming off the thrill of back to back road wins, the Beavers were ready to open their home stand with number three. One problem...no one told Pacific Union the plan and the Pioneers managed to upset the eager Beavers by 10 in a back and forth battle in Braun Athletic Center. Caltech came out to kick off the night with an answer to any question Pacific Union threw at them. Despite a full court press, Caltech handled the pressure and converted PUC mistakes into two points even without their starting point guard. Sophomore Erin Hoops stepped up to the task, and was able to assist her team in slicing through the PUC zone, giving Tech layups to add to their total. Pacific Union's three point attack kept them right in the running. Basket for basket, the teams traded the time in the driver's seat. A PUC basket led to a Caltech basket. A Caltech turnover produce a PUC score, and likewise a missed Pioneer bucket added to Tech's rebounds and two at the other end. If one team slipped the other capitalized on it, and the two squads headed into the half tied up at 27. With the opening click of the second half it looked to be all Beavers. Gaining as much as an 11 point lead with 11 minutes to go, the Beavers thought they were looking at another win. The Pioneers had a completely different ending in mind. Chipping away one point at a time, the Pioneers took the lead with 5:31 to go and never looked back. The Beavers who had been on the attack were suddenly left wondering what happen, and fighting to stay in the game. Keeping it close right to the one minute mark, Tech hoped a well placed bucket would turn things their way, but the ball didn't follow directions. The Beavers were left with no choice but to foul and hope PUC missed the shots. No such luck...as the turn in momentum gave the Pioneers all the confidence they needed to sink the shots and give them the margin needed to hold off Tech long enough for the final buzzer to sound. Caltech continues to be plagued by the turnover factor. With 30 TOs on the stat sheet, Tech gave Pacific Union ample opportunity to get the ball back. Tech was able to out rebound PUC, grabbing 56 boards off the glass to the Pioneers 42. Two beavers posted double digit scoring nights. Senior Lisa Yee had her second double double of the year, 11 points and an amazing 20 rebounds. Teri Juarez added 11 points as well. Krissy Dahl grabbed 10 rebounds of her own, along with three blocked shots. Dahl, usually good for double digit scoring, was held to only 4 points by the PUC zone. If it wasn't the turnovers, the charity stripe was the thorn in Tech's side. Shooting a miserable 20% from the line, Tech was only able to convert on three of their fifteen attempts. The Beavers are back on the court after the holiday weekend,
