WHITTER, CA – The Caltech swimming and diving teams start conference action on Saturday afternoon with a pair tri-meet against Whittier and ClaremontMuddScripps.
ClaremontMuddScripps, who placed first in all 32 events on Saturday, starts the SCIAC as the five-time defending league champions on the men's side while the women's team has won the last 10 conference titles. Last season both squads finished the season in the top 30 at the NCAA Championships.
The highlight of the meet for the Beavers was Kevin Yu. After setting the school 100 butterfly record five weeks ago, Yu shaved 0.04 off that new record by clocking a time of 54.28 on Saturday. The first year also competed in the 200 butterfly where he took fifth place with a time of 2:04.11.
Also during the men's meet Christian Rivas posted a top five finish. The senior touched the wall in 1:06.18 during the 100 yard breastroke to place fourth.
Patric Eck showed potential in his first collegiate meet. The native of Fullerton, CA, swam well in the 50 freestyle (23.41) and 100 freestyle (51.33) while scoring points for the Beavers.
During the women's meet Marqaux Lopez competed well in the 100 backstroke (1:09.50) and 200 backstroke (2:31.09) events. The sophomore was the top points producer for Caltech ladies.
It was the final meet of the 2012 calendar year for Caltech. The Beavers complete in every weekend in January as they participate in six dual meets beginning Jan. 4 against the College of Idaho.
